NI DIRECT Account
You must create or log into a nidirect online account to apply for a taxi driver's licence and manage it going forward.
Driving Licence
You must have held a full Category B (car) licence for at least 3 years.
If you hold an EEA licence (not NI), you must submit both parts of it with your application.
Theory Test
You must pass a two-part theory test before booking the practical test:
- Multiple Choice Questions (100 questions)
Topics: road safety, eco-driving, traffic signs, legal responsibilities, customer care
Pass mark: 80/100 overall, with at least 19 in each topic area - Hazard Perception Test
14 video clips with developing hazards
Max score per hazard: 5
Pass mark: 57/75
Practical Test
You can only book the practical driving test after passing the theory test.
It assesses your ability to drive safely and professionally as a taxi driver.
No refunds are given if you fail or don't meet licence requirements.
Criminal Record Check
You must apply for an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate (EDC) via AccessNI.
If your EDC contains criminal record info, you must send it to Taxi Licensing.
Good Repute
You must be considered a "fit and proper" person to hold a licence.
Serious convictions (e.g. drugs, violence, fraud) may disqualify you for 3+ years.
Each case is assessed individually, considering severity and time since conviction.
Medical
You must submit a DLM1 medical form completed by your GP.
Taxi drivers must meet Group 2 medical standards (same as bus/lorry drivers).
Further checks may be required depending on your health condition.
Right to Work
You must have the legal right to work in the UK. This means you should either:
- Hold a valid UK or Irish passport, or
- Provide a letter of good conduct from your country of origin if you're not a UK/Irish citizen.
